The Daily Waffle: Episode Thirty One
SANDMAN SERIES "READY TO GO" AT NETFLIX
There's probably a full scale Wednesday Waffle in this story. Gaiman's Sandman is arguably one of the most influential comics series ever written - if you were a slightly pretentious student type in the nineties (and, dear reader, I really, really was) it was absolutely the "go-to" book.
As a narrative it's a series that still stands up, and still sells well, but do we need a TV version? Well, we're getting one. Over on his Tumblr page Gaiman has stated that the scripts for season one are written - which clearly implies the probability of a season two, and casting is underway. Obviously everything is on hold right now, but Morpheus will be coming to a screen near you soonish.
WATCH BATTLE OF THE PLANETS
In the late 1970s, in the wake of the success of Star Wars, America's Sandy Frank company bought the U.S. rights to the 1973 Japanese Anime show "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman". I wonder what they thought they were getting, because they were pretty clearly shocked by the show's violence and adult themes.
So, they hacked it about a bit, added an annoying robot called 7-Zark-7, who was a sort of cross between R2D2 and C3PO and served to explain the story to the audience, and created an entirely new show, centring on the youthful team of G-Force.
It was massively, massively popular. The costume and vehicle designs are still amongst my favourites. Enjoy!
