TIME TO RE-CONSIDER A JUSTICE LEAGUE MUSICAL?
OK, but hear me out. Yesterday Bleeding Cool reminded the world of a genuine 1972 proposal from DC to produce a stage musical based on the Justice League. If you think that sounds absurd, consider that it was coming off the back of a 1966 Superman musical which, although well reviewed was at the time Broadway's biggest ever flop.
So yes. Stupid idea.
Or is it?
You might wonder whether people would want to see a musical about superheroes, but honestly - why wouldn't they. A few years ago if you told me that somebody was writing a musical about late eighteenth century American politics I'd have thought that was absurd too - but Hamilton has been an absolute runaway success.
You might be thinking "shyeah, right - but a Batman musical number? That could never work!" To which I say, you've seen Lego Batman, right?
You don't even need a good story - the existence of Cats, which has no real storyline that anyone has been able to discern proves that - so long as the songs are good. And whether you like musicals or not, there are powerful reasons for DC to make one.
For a start, the world is in a pretty grim place. Escapism is very much needed and musicals are profoundly escapist by their nature. Superheroes are, at their core, bright, optimistic, and a little bit silly - they're perfect musical fodder.
And that is why DC should be the company to do it. Because DC needs to shake its obsession with "Grimdark" storytelling. When the likes of Alan Moore and Frank Miller started the company down that road it was a new and exciting departure to be sure. But it's pretty much been their go-to approach for the last thirty five years and while grim and gritty has its place sometimes you just want a little levity. A hit Justice League musical could be just what the doctor ordred.

Destination Venus will begin limited re-opening on Saturday 11th July. We still have to finalise times with the cinema, but for the time being we'll be open on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday afternoons.
These are baby steps, and we will continue to proceed with an abundance of caution. We will have to put some restrictions in place and again, these will be finalised over the next few days.
We understand that restricted opening hours will make it difficult for some of you to get in to the shop and so free delivery in the Harrogate and Knaresborough area will continue for the forseeable future.
But at long last, we're coming back folks.
